The Tasks and Tools of Laboratory Technicians (One of Environmental Health Technician Professionals)

Professionals in this career pathway perform many tasks to help health sector live up to its expectations. They all have common tasks.

LABORATORY TECHNICIANS

Laboratory technicians carry out the work that allows scientists to concentrate on, and perform, the more complex analytical processes in the laboratory. Their works are majorly laboratory-based and may work alone or as a part of a team.

TASKS

Their tasks include but not limited to the following: They

  • Gather samples of gases, soils, industrial wastewater, water, or asbestos products. All these are to be used to conduct tests on pollutant levels or identify causes and effects of pollution.
  • Gather from different sources models of gases, water, soils, industrial wastewater, or asbestos products to be used for pollutant levels or identify sources
  • Observe emission control devices so as to be sure they are working appropriately and comply with government regulations, be it state or federal.
  • Formulate procedures needed for testing.
  • Check sanitary conditions of public facilities.

TOOLS USED

There are various tools that are available to Laboratory Technicians in the performance of their tasks. These tools are designed to make their works easy and enhance their performance. Some of these tools include:

  • Air pollutant samplers – used for microbiological examination of the air during the inspection of the microbiological contamination. E.g.  Digital hand meters; Handheld laser particle counters; Particulate monitors
  • Darkfield microscopes – Phase contrast microscopes
  • Hydrocarbons analyzers or detectors – Chlorinated hydrocarbon testing equipment; Halide meters
  • Logging instruments for water wells – Interface probes; Water well depth meters
  • Ohmmeters – Volt-ohm meters VOM
  • Personal computers – Pocket personal computers PC
  • Sampling pumps – Centrifugal water sampling pumps; Low-flow pumps; Purge pumps; Water sample extraction pumps
  • Still cameras – 35millimeter cameras
  • Vibration testers – Vibration monitors
